When Should You Get a Thyroid Test Done?

Thyroid hormones, namely Thyroid stimulating hormone((TSH), Tetraiodothyronine(T4), Triiodothyronine(T3) are the three important thyroid hormones in the human body. Produced and secreted by the thyroid gland present in the anterior aspect of the neck, these hormones are important for functioning of all organ systems of the body. Important functions of thyroid hormones are:

  • Regulates body metabolism, increases the basal metabolic rate(BMR) and helps convert oxygen and nutrients into usable forms of energy.

  • Supports the brain development and growth in early stages of life.

  • Increases heart rate and cardiac activity.

  • Regulates protein synthesis and bone health.

  • Regulates body temperature.

  • Affects menstrual cycle and ovulation.

  • Affects mood and cognitive functions.

A decrease in thyroid hormones T3 and T4 levels in the blood causes hypothyroidism in adults and cretinism in children. Hypothyroidism is caused by autoimmune diseases(Hashimotos), iodine deficiency, post thyroid surgeries, pituitary gland disorder, postpartum.

Hypothyroidism presents with an array of symptoms which can present in a vague manner and may be mistaken for other diseases.

  • Fatigue and sluggishness

  • Weight gain, puffy face

  • Cold intolerance, dry skin

  • Slow heart rate

  • Depression and low mood

  • Hair thinning

  • Hoarseness of voice

  • Menstrual irregularities, slow growth

Hyperthyroidism on the other hand is excess production and activity of the thyroid hormones leading to acceleration of the basal metabolism. It can be caused by Grave’s disease, multinodular goitre, toxic adenoma, thyroiditis, and pituitary independent TSH secretion. Hyperthyroid presents with:

  • Weight loss, fatigue

  • Palpitations, nervousness

  • Heat intolerance, tremors

  • Increased bowel movement

  • Sleep disturbances, eye changes

  • Pulsatile goitre

When should you do a thyroid test?

Whenever you experience the above mentioned symptoms, you can schedule a blood test and consult your physician with the test reports. Based on your symptoms and reports the doctor will advise a dosage of thyroid hormone supplement and give the appropriate treatment.
